First off, a might congratulations to Liryc Dela Cruz of South Cotabato and Carlo Francisco Manatad of Tacloban!
Their movies, Sa Pagitan ng Pagdalaw at Paglimot and Junilyn Has respectively, have been included in the Pardi di Domani section of the Locarno Film Festival, which will run from Aug 5-15 in Switzerland.
You may remember Dela Cruz. He’s the guy who got the tattoo of Lav Diaz’s Norte last year.
We mention that bit because Dela Cruz dedicates his movie to his mentors, Lav Diaz among them. “In a way, this is a gift for them. Na yung ‘bata nila, nakagawa ng maayos na pelikula,” he tells Coconuts Manila.
But “Sa Pagitan,” which revolves around the theme of remembering and letting go, is basically about and for his father, who passed away a year ago. “I want to let go of our memories. Ayoko na maramdaman yung pain, pero hindi pa rin ako handa. Paano natin palalayain yung mga alala?”
Junilyn Has, meanwhile, is about “a nightclub dancer who temporarily takes a rest from her job during the visit of Pope Francis,” notes Arvin Mendoza on Inquirer.net.
Continues the report: “Manatad said he was pleasantly surprised when he learned that his film was chosen. ‘I submitted it last-minute [with] no expectations at all.”
While Dela Cruz was trained by slow cinema pioneer Lav Diaz, Manatad’s experience includes working as a film editor before finally wearing the film director’s hat.
The Pardi di Domani section of the prestigious film fest aims to showcase the future talents of cinema.
