Independent film Women Of The Weeping River added another award to their list of accolades last week when its lead actress Laila Ulao won Best Actress in the first ASEAN-China Film Festival.

The awarding ceremony was held on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) made the announcement on the same day and congratulated Ulao for her win.

In another Facebook post, Ulao said: “I think this is the plot twist before 2017 ends that people have been talking about. Legit! Alhamdulillah!”

Women Of The Weeping River tells the story of a woman in a Muslim community in the southern Philippines and her life dealing with her husband’s death.  Ulao also won Best Actress at last year’s QCinema International Film Festival, while the film won Best Picture.

The film also won six awards at the 40th Gawad Urian Awards held last July including Best Picture and Best Director.
