Filipino film ‘Smaller and Smaller Circles’ nominated for award in Busan International Film Festival

The anticipated movie adaptation of Filipino mystery novel Smaller and Smaller Circles is nominated for an award in the upcoming Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

ABS-CBN News announced the film’s nomination today. According to the report, Smaller and Smaller Circles is one of 10 nominees for the Kim Ji-seok Award.

The award was created this year in honor of Kim Ji-seouk, the festival’s co-founder and former head film selector, who died early this year at the Cannes Film Festival.

Out of the 10 nominees, two will win the award and a cash prize of US$10,000

The film will also have its world premiere at the South Korean festival which will run from Oct. 12 — 21 in Busan, South Korea.

Smaller and Smaller Circles is directed Raya Martin and stars Nonie Buencamino, Sid Lucero, Bembol Roco, and Carla Humphries. It is based on the story written by Filipino author F.H. Batacan.

The book won the Carlos Palanca Grand Prize for English Novel in 1999 and was published in 2002. It is said to be the first Filipino crime novel.

The story is about the murders of boys in Payatas, a poor area in Manila, and two Jesuit priests who do forensic work trying to solve the murders.

After its premiere in BIFF, the film will be in cinemas by Dec. 6.
