We’ve all heard of Xyza Cruz-Bacani’s inspiring story.

The 27-year-old photographer was once a domestic helper in Hong Kong, but on her days off, she took stunning black and white photos that have earned her opportunities around the world, including the supremely prestigious scholarship at the New York University in Manhattan.

Well, there are other inspiring domestic helpers who find a way to create art when they are not on duty.

Donna Sagundang left her life in Baguio in search of a better life. She has been working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong since 2014. On her days off, she creates beautiful artworks.

“I wanted to study art when I was a kid, but I did not have the pencils, which were very expensive in the Philippines,” Sagudang told the Asia Times.

She has created drawings of popular cartoons and personalities, including former Ms. Universe Pia Wurtzbach, singer Joao Constancia, and Filipina actress Jessy Mendiola.

Sagundang’s employers also recognized her talent asked her to paint their house in Yuen Long district. Sagundang was free to draw and paint whatever she wanted on the walls, doors and on the garden floor.

The young artist feels homesick all the time, but she chooses to work abroad to help support her younger brother, who will soon finish college.

“I came from a big family with seven siblings. We used to support the younger ones,” Sagundang said.

She hopes to get some formal training in art someday.
