Derek Ramsay and Coleen Garcia made a case for their upcoming film Ex With Benefits saying the movie means no disrespect to medical representatives.

After the release of their trailer, some folks believed the film put the profession in an unflattering light.

Ex With Benefits is about exes Adam (Derek) and Arkisha (Coleen) who encounter each other again after more than a decade. Arkisha is an ambitious medical representative who needs Adam’s endorsement.

In one scene, Adam tells Arkisha that it’s the med rep’s duty to convince doctors that their products work. Arishka then tells Adam that “It’s worth it” and the trailer cuts to a scene of them sleeping together.

But Derek says they are not stereotyping med reps and that critics should give the movie a chance.

“Sana, these people, with no disrespect to them, would give us the chance to show that we are not disrespecting them. We have complete respect for their work,” Derek said in a recent bloggers’ conference promoting the film.

Coleen also explained she, herself, does not want to be generalized based on her profession so she made sure she focused on the character flaw of Arkisha.

“I understand naman why they got offended…  The thing is the story is not about a doctor and a med rep. They may be a doctor and a med rep, but it’s really about two exes getting back together. So it is really more about the character flaw of my character… it’s something that she’s been through the past that’s gonna be the way that she is. Parang it’s not to say na all med reps are like that because I myself am against generalization. I don’t like generalizing people based on their profession, based on anything.

Coleen also assured everyone that, “Hindi naman basta-bastang ganun lang sya. She is the only one like that. There are other med reps there, but they are not like that so I could understand why people could jump to conclusions because that’s the only thing they have seen so far. We see nothing offensive in the movie because we know the whole story.”

“I think we will be able to change their reaction once they watch the movie,” Derek says.

Ex With Benefits will be in cinemas on Sep 2.
