Filipino pro basketball player Doug Kramer and his wife, model Cheska Kramer, are weathering a storm of online criticism for a photo they posted on Facebook last week.

It is a diagram illustrating the roles of a husband and wife. The husband’s roles include “protect family” and “provide for family” while the wife’s roles include “children” and “managers of home.”

The post — which they uploaded last Tuesday — also has a caption that includes a bible passage that reads: “Slaves (Servants), (the people who work for you. It can also pertain to you as an employee.), obey your earthly masters (your boss, or can apply to you if you’re the boss of your company) in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.”

Some netizens, not all that surprisingly, reacted negatively to the post, calling it “patriarchal” and “sexist.”

However, others came to the Kramers’ defense and said that the post was misinterpreted. Some even shared their reason for living out the same teaching.

The Facebook post has since been edited to include an explanation from the couple. They wrote that the established roles do not “make us any less or inferior to each other” and that both husband and wife were created equal but with different responsibilities.

Their explanation also says that they understand that some couples reverse their roles. “I have friends who are in that situation. As long as they agree wholeheartedly with their roles and are happy with it. I do not see anything wrong with it,” the post says.

Doug and Cheska have been married since 2008 and have three children.

The post has received 28,000 reactions, 6,797 shares, and 1,000 comments as of this posting.

So what do you think? Is this archaic or a tried and tested path to a happy marriage? Let us know in the comments below.
