For anyone who missed this year’s Cinemalaya Film Festival, here’s some good news: Respeto, this year’s best film, will get a nationwide release on September 20.
The news was confirmed on the film’s Facebook page Thursday along with the release of its full trailer.
Respeto is a film directed by Treb Monteras II with a screenplay written by Njel De Mesa. It stars local hip-hop artists Abra and Loonie, and actor Dido de la Paz. The film is a coming of age story about Hendrix (Abra), a teenager living in Manila’s slums, who tries to make it in the city’s underground hip-hop scene.

“RESPETO is a celebration of the underground Pinoy hip-hop world and how we find the words to find ourselves,” the film’s Facebook page says.
Also in the cast is Cebuana actress Chai Fonacier, Sylvester Bagadiong, Brian Arda and Kate Alejandrino, among others.
Apart from being named Best Film, Respeto also won the Jury Prize, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor, and Audience Choice awards in this year’s Cinemalaya. It was also Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.
