Child abuse charges vs. Freddie Aguilar junked

Now, he has something to sing about.

“The Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office has dismissed the child abuse charges filed against folk singer Freddie Aguilar due to insufficient evidence and lack of legal standing of the complainants to file the case against him,” reports Chito A. Chavez in Tempo.

Concerned citizens had filed the case against Aguilar after it was publicized that he had a 16-year-old girlfriend. Aguilar was 60 when the case was filed. He later converted to Islam and married his teen girlfriend in Muslim rites.

The report cited the five-page resolution, which absolved Aguilar from the charges of violating Republic Act 7610 (Anti-Child Abuse law). It said that the complainants “have no personal knowledge as to whether or not Aguilar was having sexual manipulation and intercourse with the minor victim (the singer’s 16-year-old wife).”
