ABS-CBN’s updated Pangako Sa ‘Yo starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla that premiered Monday isn’t the first time the original was retold or adapted for a different audience.
In 2012, Cambodian Television Network (CTN) announced that production was underway for its localized version of the pioneering “teleserye” that originally starred Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales.
CTN, the same network that aired the original 2000 series in Cambodia, tapped video and film production company Khmer Mekong Films (KMF) to do the local adaptation, titled The Promise.
The 198-episode series started airing thrice weekly in February 2013, with uploads on YouTube following its primetime telecast, and concluded in July last year.
“Based on a gripping story from the Philippines about power, corruption and love, the scenario has been carefully adapted by KMF’s writers to suit the Cambodia cultural context and audience sensitivities,” its official description read.
An enduring favorite which has aired in over 20 foreign territories, the original Pangako Sa ‘Yo centered on sweethearts Angelo (Rosales) and Yna (Hermosa), who are anguished over the discovery that they might be half-siblings.
ABS-CBN’s modern retelling with the same title is also under the direction of Rory B. Quintos, this time with Olivia Lamasan and Dado Lumibao. It also stars Jodi Sta. Maria as Amor, Angelica Panganiban as Claudia, and Ian Veneracion as Eduardo.
