Cebu is home to some of the most delicious street food in the Philippines. It has already received plenty of recognition on international TV programs (courtesy, especially, of the late Anthony Bourdain) — yet this April, it’s bound to be known by more people overseas thanks to a new Netflix series.
Netflix announced today that it will be featuring Cebu’s talented cooks in the new original series Street Food, which will debut on the global streaming platform on April 26.
The show’s Cebu episode will feature Florencio “Entoy” Escabas, a cook who used his skills to break the generational cycle of poverty while simultaneously helping his community. Escabas is an expert in cooking nilarang bakasi, a soured stew which supposedly has an aphrodisiac quality.
Another Cebuano cook who will be on the series is Leslie Enjambre, an entrepreneur who inherited her grandmother’s lechon (suckling pig) business. There’s also Ian Secong, the owner of the popular restaurant Azul which serves tuslob-buwa, an old Cebuano dish made up of sautéed onions, garlic, and pig brains.
Lastly, the show will also feature roadside eatery owner Rubilyn Diko Manayon, whose most popular dish is lumpia (spring roll) — proof that Cebu’s cuisine has been made more vibrant because of its influence from other cultures.
Aside from Cebu, the series also has episodes devoted to the street food in other cities such as Bangkok, Thailand; Yogyakarta, Indonesia; and Singapore.
