Boracay gets its first cinema

If you thought businesses were done commercializing the Philippines’ Boracay island, you thought wrong.

The first cinema on the once secluded paradise opened last Friday, which means there’s really no running away from the latest blockbusters. Owned and operated by City Malls and ABS-CBN, the cinema is located inside City Mall Boracay and has two theaters that can seat 220 people.

While this may sound like a let down for tourists who visit the island to get away from indoor city activities like watching a movie, it actually provides convenience for Boracay’s locals.

In the past, residents would have travel for four hours via boat and bus to watch a movie in Roxas City, located in a different province.

Imagine traveling that long, only to be disappointed by movies last month’s Justice League.

City Mall Boracay opened its doors in February and can be found along Diniwid Beach Road and Boracay Tambisaan Jetty Port Road, away from the famed White Beach.

Known for its blue waters, white sand beach, and raging nightlife, Boracay has been named the world’s best island by magazine Condé Nast Traveler but continues to suffer from overdevelopment, a problem the government has had trouble solving.
