Lea Salonga, who has portrayed a couple of “Les Miserables” characters in the stage musical and concert versions of the famous book, has released a review of the movie through her column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
So what does she think of it?
She says that it is “its own unique creation” and that “orchestrations are rethought.”
Lea thinks that Hugh jackman as Jean Valjean “lives up ti his musical-theater pedigree” and that he was “committed” and “stunning.”
She considers Anne Hathaway “beautiful” as Fantine.
She wrote, “I love the stage incarnation of this character, how her track was plotted in the film, each rung on her descent into hell, leading into a most heartbreaking rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ which sent tears flowing. Hathaway’s performance was equal parts rawness and grit, and vulnerability. If she wins a slew of awards for this, they will all be well-deserved.”
Lea also enjoyed the performances of Eddie Redmayne as Marius, plus Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Thenadiers.
In closing, the world-renowned actress wrote: “I highly recommend this film. The score remains gorgeous and the acting sublime. Don’t forget to bring tissue, you’re going to need it.”
