Alfie Anido took drugs and committed suicide, says ex-GF Katina Ponce Enrile

One of Philippine showbiz’s urban legends just got answered, or has it?

In a no-holds barred interview, Katrina Ponce Enrile revealed that the cause of her former boyfriend Alfie Anido’s death 32 years ago was suicide.

“We were already planning on getting married. We were never on and off, in fact, we were on until the day of his birthday and suicide. I only broke up with him that very moment, just before he committed suicide on Dec. 30, 1981,” the daughter of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile tells Wilson Flores in a surprisingly candid Q&A in The Philippine Star

It has long been rumored that Anido was killed upon the orders of Senator Enrile (then Minster of Defense and a close ally of Ferdinand Marcos) who was said to be unhappy with the coupling.

According to Katrina, Anido proposed a month and a half before he killed himself—and by that time she was already pregnant, though she had not told Anido. She lost the baby months later from a miscarriage. Did her parents object to the planned union? “We were already in our 20s, so we felt we had no need to tell our parents. Alfie was 20 years old, I was also 20.”

The interview reveals that Anido had left a suicide note, which was addressed to his father. In it, he wrote, “Tell Katrina: I love you.”

That note must have been written very quickly. According to Katrina, because of a lover’s quarrel, she broke up with him during his birthday party because “I didn’t like what he did.” His birthday was on December 30. When asked if Alfie took illegal drugs, she replied, “He took everything.”

Anido was one of the original Regal Babies along with Gabby Concepcion, William and Albert Martinez, Maricel Soriano, Snooky Serna and Dina Bonnevie. He was loved for his burgis good looks. He starred in movies such as Katorse, Temptation Island, Dormitoryo, Diary of Cristina Gaston, and Blue Jeans.
