After weeks of denials, James Reid and Nadine Lustre confirm breakup

After weeks of denials (and Instagram photos showing them vacationing in Brazil together), musicians and actors James Reid and Nadine Lustre, better known by their couple portmanteau “JaDine,” have confirmed that they have called it quits.

The highly-publicized confirmation came in a joint statement from the couple broadcast on TV talk show The Tonight Show with Boy Abunda late last night. In it, the pair said that they have split up, “but not for all the reasons that are being spread on the tabloids and social media.”

“But because after quiet and mature conversations, we decided to focus on ourselves not only for our careers, but more for our personal growth, as we are still young and we want to achieve as much as we can,” the statement said.

JaDine fans, at least, were assured that the breakup was amicable.

“We are in good terms and are still really good friends and will continue to work with each other especially when it comes to music,” they added.

The announcement was more than a little ironic, coming as it did shortly after Lustre publicly skewered veteran entertainment journalist Ricky Lo for reporting that she had broken up with Reid. The actress also slammed the showbiz columnist for mentioning the allegedly fragile state of her mental health, which Lo had said was spurred by her brother’s untimely death.

In the days following the reporting faux pas, showbiz reporter Jobert Sucaldito came to Lo’s defense, accusing Lustre of intentionally spreading rumors about the couple’s breakup to generate publicity. He also cracked a mean-spirited suicide joke in the process, drawing fresh criticism from both Lustre and the Twittersphere. (He later apologized.)

Following their official announcement, JaDine’s breakup has again set Twitter on fire, generating over 100,000 tweets as of press time, with “Nadine,” “James Reid,” and “#Jadine” among today’s top trending terms.

Lustre and Reid first broke through with their 2014 romcom Diary ng Panget (“Diary of an Ugly (Girl)”), and on the hit primetime TV drama series On The Wings of Love.
