After rift, Julia Barretto wants to make dad Dennis Padilla proud via movie role

Actress Julia Barretto and her father Dennis Padilla were once not in good terms. Earlier this year, they patched things up.

Now, it seems their relationship has really taken a turn for the better.

Julia said she wants to make her father proud with her latest movie Vince & Kath & James, an entry in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.

“Sana may time siya for me (I hope he has time for me),” she said during the press conference for her film fest entry on Tue, Dec 6.

Julia, 19, said she hopes to know her father’s reaction about her performance because Vince & Kath & James is her first ever comedy project.

Dennis, 54, is a veteran comedian who started out in showbiz as a child star.

“Syempre invite ko siya kasi this is a romcom and my dad is a comedian so syempre gusto ko makakuha ng reaction, ng advice galing sa kanya. Gusto ko rin na maging proud ‘yung daddy ko sa first ever comedy project ko,”

(Of course I will invite him to watch because this is a romantic-comedy and my dad is a comedian. So of course, I want to get his reaction, his advice.. I want him to be proud of my first ever comedy project.)

Julia and Dennis’ reportedly began when the ABS-CBN actress attempted to legally drop her father’s last name. This is after Marjorie Barretto, Julia’s mother, filed a case to nullify her marriage with Dennis.

But Julia and Dennis reconciled last May.

“Baby steps talaga yan. He’s still my father at the end of the day. Syempre, mahal ko pa rin yun talaga (Of course I still love him),” Julia said.

“Everything is so much better than it was before,” she added.

It really is — and not just on the familial front. Vince & Kath & James is Julia’s first leading role in a movie.

The project is a potential star maker for the young actress whose career, some naysayers may say, has failed to take off despite the hype surrounding her entry in showbiz in 2013.

Vince & Kath & James, the only movie by a major film company in this year’s MMFF, is movie based on the “textserye” (a story told via SMS and chat conversations) that turned viral early this year. It was later published as a book series by ABS-CBN Publishing. The movie adaptation, which also stars Joshua Garcia and Ronnie Alonte, is directed by Theodore Boborol.

Let’s see if Vince & Kath & James will help Julia live up to her showbiz promise.
