5 art shows to see this week (Jul 14-20)

Emmanuel Santos, ‘2nd Earth’
Until Jul 20

The Melbourne-based artist dons a spaceman costume and takes self-portraits, using an analogue large-format camera. His unexpected subjects include tribal communities in the Philippines. CCP Little Theater Lobby (Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco), CCP Complex, Roxas Blvd, Pasay City; +63 2 832 1125. Tue-Sun 10am-6pm. Free.

Romeo Lee, ‘Lee’
Until Jul 21

Lee’s bold colors and confident strokes look like they’re from the pages of a Brothers Grimm’ fairy tale: playful and unnerving in equal measure. Art Informal Main Gallery, 277 Connecticut St, Greenhills East, Mandaluyong; +63 2 7258518. Call for viewing hours.

Elaine Navas, ‘After Sir’
Until Aug 2

The Singapore-based artist known for her highly detailed figurative paintings pays homage to mentor Roberto Chabet, a well-loved UP Fine Arts professor who loved making art, often indecipherable, with random objects. In her renditions, the late conceptual artist’s works gain a softer, more accessible veneer. Finale Art Gallery, Warehouse 17, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Chino Roces Ave, Makati; +63 2 8132310. Mon-Sat 10am-7pm. Free.

Gilda Cordero Fernando, ‘Same Difference: Ganon pa din ang Diperensya’
Until Aug 9
Gilda Cordero Fernando
The 82-year-old artist has heard and read many myths in her lifetime and in this exhibition she shakes, twists and reconfigures them for the Filipino palate. Silverlens, 2/F YMC Bldg 2, 2320 Don Chino Roces Ave Ext, Makati; +63 2 8160044 Mon-Fir 10am-7pm, Sat 1-6pm. Free.

Frank Callaghan, ‘Dead Ends’

Frank Callaghan
These photographs are quiet and almost deafening in their silence, some inspired by role-playing video games when players reach a blank wall. The photographer deftly navigated London’s blind alleys to capture these dead ends. Slab, 2/F YMC Bldg 2, 2320 Don Chino Roces Ave Ext, Makati; +63 2 8160044 Mon-Fir 10am-7pm, Sat 1-6pm. Free.
