Let me repeat it: this year’s Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant was really, really promising, but it turned out to be a hot, entertaining mess.
It had all the ingredients of a stereotypical beauty pageant. Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj, who did some hosting duties (together with main hosts Martin Nievera and Dawn Zulueta), buckled and had some boo-boos. During the swimsuit portion, someone lost her balance and almost fell.

And then there’s the Q&A portion — definitely the best part of the show. It had the usual “Thank you for that question” and “I believe…” and “world peace,” plus the expected seconds of silence, circuitous answers, and huh?-inducing ones.
For example, the big winner of the night, Ariella Arida (Bb. Pilipinas – Universe) gave a generic answer which highlighted her pronunciation “skills.”
In all honesty, this batch had a lot of really beautiful candidates, but most of them had stupid/practiced/WTF/huh? answers. As in 13 out of 15. That junk food answer has got to be the best.
And oh, Martin Nievera has got to be the worst choice for pageant host. Sure, he’s a great host — if we’re talking about “ASAP” or his talk shows. But his style, and failure to control himself/tendency to host as if he’s hosting “ASAP” or his talk shows sure make him look pathetic. We don’t need a host who will comment on EVERYTHING, will laugh whenever he finds something funny, or will burst into song when he’s reminded of a particular tune.

Despite all these, the pageant did some things pretty well: the swimsuits and the gowns (well, kind of), how there was no Top 5 (it’s pretty exciting to go from Top 15 straight to the winners), and those tidbits about past winners.
Now we can all sleep, but before we do, on last thing: Supranational??? WTF.
