Which of these now-showing movie trivia are true? Which on is a lie? Tell us below.
As you know, it’s twice more fun to go to your local cinema and see movie titles that you actually knew about rather than winging it and risking seeing a bad movie. Here on Coconuts, we not only want you to find a cool movie to watch this week, we also want you to actually learn a thing or two about this week’s freshest films while enjoying the learning process per se! How do we do it? By playing a fun game called Two Truths + 1 Lie!
This week, the metro’s cinemas will be teeming with action-packed movies that will surely keep you on the edge of your plush, red theater seat! First of all, the 4DX version of the animated awesomeness that is How to Train Your Dragon 2 will still be showing in most cinemas!. Then there’s the mysterious and baffling film called Third Person which earned a sweet premier spot at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival. Oh and the comedy, action sequel of 21 Jump Street 21 is up in theaters, too.
Here are three movie factoids—which may or may not be true—to prep you for this week’s movie selections! One thing is for certain, two of those are true and one of them isn’t! Let us know by commenting below!
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2
Dir: Dean DeBois (2014). USA. Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill. MTRCB G.

TRUTH OR LIE: How to Train Your Dragon is definitely becoming a trilogy. Yes, there will definitely be a How to Train Your Dragon 3 in the very near future. Apparently, Canadian-American director Dean DeBois pitched that if he was to direct another Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and Toothless (voiced by Randy Thom) movie, it has to be a trilogy. DeBois supposedly hated the idea of a sequel saying “animated sequels seem unnecessary” and had wanted to treat the next movie as that of Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back which served as a huge turning point for the whole franchise. With How to Train Your Dragon, he explains that the first movie now only serves as the first act in a bigger story where the second movie serves as the important transition between the first and the third, making it more of a coming-of-age franchise other than just an adventure-filled movie-after-movie-after-movie. If this REALLY is the case, then bring on the popcorn because this is something we won’t want to miss!
22 JUMP STREET
Dir: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller (2014). USA. Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Wyatt Russell. Dave Franco. MTRCB R-13.

TRUTH OR LIE: Watch out for the cameos because they are aplenty! There were been rumors that a cameo-fueled sequel for 21 Jump Street is bound to happen any time this year and well, it did. So let’s see if your guess is right with this one. Is it true that 21 Jump Street is filled with lots of cameos you probably wouldn’t notice during the film if not for this article? Maybe. Apparently, the whole movie is spiked with other movie references like The Amazing Spider-Man, Spring Break, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Also, we can probably file another full article about the pop culture references and Easter eggs in the film (including a construction site blatantly bearing the words “23 Jump Street Condos Coming Soon”). But what you really have to watch out for are the cameos by artists like Richard Grieco (who played officer Dennis Booker in the past movie), Dustin Nguyen (who was also in the past movie as Harry Truman), Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Seth Rogen, and real life DJ Diplo!
THE THIRD PERSON
Dir: Paul Haggis (2013). UK, USA, Germany, Belgium. Olivia Wilde, Liam Neeson, Mila Kunis, James Franco. MTRCB R-16.

TRUTH OR LIE: This indie film is about three people in a huge twisted plot line. We did mention that almost all the featured films this week are action-packed right? We have fire breathing dragons, undercover police stuff and to add to that, there’s this indie-turned-mainstream twisted film from Paul Haggis’ The Third Person which is all about three people wrapped up in a plot line so complex, it’ll probably make you question your own sanity. The story revolves around the three main characters: Michael (played by Liam Neespon), Julia (played by Mila Kunis) and Sean (played by James Franco), who all become the center of a huge secret involving all the people they love in a weird, mysterious set up. The three characters were also supposedly in different locations but certain scenes involving cars, notes and paintings end up in different places in the world that crossed with the other characters paths and yeah, we would spare you the spoilers but this film is definitely one hell of a ride you shouldn’t miss—especially if you’re into Detective Conan and stuff like that. Oh and also, The Third Person is the third film where Mila Kunis and James Franco star together! The two other movies were Date Night and Oz the Great and the Powerful.
ANSWERS TO LAST WEEK’S 2 TRUTHS AND A LIE
TRUTH: #2 and #3! Well, granted Edge of Tomorrow is not “technically” a manga but a novel turned graphic novel (or manga adaptation as it is also called), it still is based on the Japanese sci-fi fiction titled All You Need is Kill by Horishi Sakurazaka.
It is also true that The Raid 2: Berandal had two alternate versions. The UK version a scene where a gangster was impaled by a claw hammer while the US version is devoid of that particular scene and was heavily cut of other bloody, morbid scenes (pun not intended) to avoid an NC-17 rating! We’re probably still getting the US version here in the Philippines.
LIE: #1. Yes, dear Pinoy NerdFighters (if you know what a NerdFighter means then bless your proudly geeky soul), John Green did not appear on The Fault in our Stars despite the fact that he was present all throughout the filming process. He mentioned in interviews that he was terrible in acting so he had decided to spare us the embarrassment and just keep his musings along the confines of the internet via his vlog (Vlogbrothers on YouTube). Also, his eldest son, four-year-old Henry, did not appear in the movie alongside him. The child who was supposed to act as his daughter was called Sophia and she didn’t make it to the film as well but she’s still cute so. Also the movie is fantastic! Did you cry? We didn’t, but that’s because we read the book already.
