Vegan food gets a bad rap for being tasteless and unnecessarily fussy, but this local ice cream brand completely debunks those myths.

Declared the “Best Vegan Dessert in Manila” by top chefs and food influencers at a PETA Asia event yesterday was Super Scoops’ Coffee Cashew Crumble ice cream.

We tried it, and yes, it really is good. It’s satisfyingly creamy and thick, and has just the right amount of coffee flavor without leaving any kind of bitter aftertaste.

Coconuts Manila caught up with Super Scoops owner Carmela Cancio-Go at the PETA event yesterday, and found out that the cool treats served as her shop are made with coconut milk and are 100 percent plant-based — but this isn’t obvious because it doesn’t have that polarizing coconut-y taste found in sorbets, or that chalky texture that some associate with sunscreen.

It also doesn’t have that icy texture most dairy-free ice creams have (cream is in there for a reason, right?) and holds up nicely even in Manila’s hot summer weather.

While Super Scoops’ Coffee Cashew Crumble ice cream brought home the prize, we also thought their Strawberries & Cream flavor was even better. The pure strawberry flavor really hits you, and it tastes natural and fresh to the finish.

A pint of Super Scoops is priced at PHP350 (US$6.7). It is available in select supermarkets and online through The Superfood Grocer website.

Apart from Super Scoops, the event also showcased other locally-made vegan desserts. Below are some — in our eyes — Honorable Mentions.
