Secrets of the city: Spaceship carinderia on 21 Kamias Rd

We love underground and independent places that stand for something — and this newly opened carinderia in Quezon City, which promises to serve only cheap, good food, is one of them. It recently hosted the 1st Kamias Jazz Fest

OUR SECRET: Spaceship (21 Kamias Rd, Quezon City; Tue-Sun 10am-midnight).

WHY GO: Owned by artist filmmaker and relentless indie events organizer Khavn De La Cruz, Spaceship’s cook claims he hasn’t made any dish twice since it opened a few weeks ago. He goes to the market twice a day and lets his imagination run wild based on what’s available. The lutong bahay dishes start at PHP30 and a cup of rice sets you back PHP10. There’s a menu board that lists the meals of the day. Fancy, right? Despite the claim of being open 881/2 hours (a reference to the movie, get it?) a day, it doesn’t start serving till noon, closes for siesta, and reopens for dinner and drinks from 6pm to 2am.

HOW TO GET THERE: The nearest MRT is Kamuning, but you’ll still need to take a jeepney or a taxi going to Kamias. The restaurant is beside a funeral parlor and near Orange Place Hotel.
