Soon, limoncello lovers won’t have to venture far to Italy (or their nearest fancy deli) to get their hands on a bottle — as the town of Sagada in Mt. Province now has their own using locally grown lemons.
Andrew Chinalpan, who runs Sagada Cellar Door, a local craft distillery in the upland town, posted photos of the liqueur online.
“The first limoncello from Sagada. What an honor to have it with some of the farmers who grows meyer lemons mostly from the south part of Sagada,” he wrote.
Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur made from lemon rinds, alcohol, and sugar, and is typically served as an after-dinner drink.
Chinalpan said that there are exploratory talks to form a multipurpose cooperative focused on producing liqueur and rum as the town farmers also harvest sugarcane.
Sagada is an agriculture-rich town known for producing arabica coffee, smoked meats, as well as a wide range of fruits and vegetables.
Chinalpan also said that producing local arabica coffee liqueur is also in the works.
