The appeal of store-bought cakes and cupcakes is rapidly declining with the online world burgeoning with baking enthusiasts. Armed with whisks and mixing-bowls, home-bakers are here to satisfy your insatiable hunger for a delectable saccharin fix. Heres a list of homebakers you can trust. When you bring their sweets to your next party, you can still proudly say that they’re are made at home- just not yours.
1. Baby Yulo’s strawberry shortcake
They say that Mrs. Baby Yulo has a lot of other creations, but her strawberry shortcake alone is enough to earn her a reputation as one of the most sought-after homebakers in Manila. It’s even enough reason to go through Forbes Park security when picking-up an order. Her cake’s imprefect surface gives it a very homemade appeal. The sponge cake is soft and light, and the icing is like really, really good strawberry ice cream. One bite and you’ll know that she didn’t scrimp on the ingredients. Well, her cakes do come with a hefty price tag (PHP1,600 for a big one and PHP1,000 for a small one), but this slice of heaven is definitely worth it. 2. Spoonful Cakes and Pastries
Krystle Dimaculangan is a big fan of Georgetown Cupcake and the Momofuku Milk Bar. During her trips abroad, she found inspiration to start her own baking business. Hence, Spoonful Cakes and Cupcakes was born. While she makes adorable cakes with beautiful fondant art, her cupcakes really steal the show. All her cupcakes have four components (cupcake base, filing, frosting and garnish). A particularly mouth-watering combination is her Lava Me Harder, a chocolate cupcake with liquid cheesecake lava and dark chocolate frosting. To order, visit Spoonful’s Facebook page. You may get in touch with Krystle at +63 919 9991178.
3. Niji Desserts
Niji Desserts started out as a thesis project in 2008, but baker Clarissa Banaag didn’t have the heart to close her little shop after graduating. She decided to formally study Pastry Arts at The French Culinary Institute (now The International Culinary Center in New York). Niji takes pride in homemade cakes with natural and authentic ingredients: real butter and cream, fresh fruits (no preservatives used) and high quality Belgian chocolate. Niji brownies, an original recipe from Clarissa’s mom, are a crowd favorite. These brownies have a crackle-y top and a middle that is fudge-y and super satisfying. She also specializes in dessert packages ideal for small parties. To order, visit Niji’s Facebook page. You may get in touch with Clarissa at +63 917 8446064.
