COCONUTS HOT SPOT—I’ve always loved small eateries that offer good food. For me, these shops are proof that despite the size and deep pockets of corporate fastfood machineries, there’s always room for something new, fresh and inspiring. They also reflect their owner’s hard work and passion for good food. I’m not really a big fan of fancy ambiance and classy interior décor, and that’s why I’m glad whenever I discover places like Meal Point.
THE LOOK
Because of its size, a literal hole in the wall, it could a little difficult to find this place. Tip: Look for a white tarpaulin with the initials MP printed in red and green, and a claim that this is a place “where proud burgers are humbly served.” Indoors a maximum of four diners can be seated on a wall-facing long table.
A chalk board lists offerings of burgers, sides and drinks.
The decor is minimal, but the smell of grilled burgers in the air is at a maximum. From five in the evening till closing, tables for about eight people are set up on the sidewalk.
The letters MP on the tarp reminded me of a popular eight-weight division boxing champion—that said, the flavors of Meal Point’s Burgers do pack a punch.
THE GRUB
We opted for Heavy Combo (PHP148) which contained a quarter pounder cheeseburger, French fries, nachos with cheese and salsa, and a mug of iced tea. The burger was the star. Although I can immediately tell that its not 100% pure beef, it works for me and the flavors are awesome. It has a spicy meaty taste that can’t be easily overpowered by mustard, ketchup or mayonaisse. A pure beef patty with salt and pepper tends to be a bit bland. Meal Point’s version is the opposite.
The side of nachos had grated cheese on top and the salsa dip was average. The fries were not as crisp as I’d have wanted it, but the overall value of the meal already made me happy. The iced tea was served in a Mason jar and that added a fun twist.
One may also order just the burger (PHP78) and choose add-ons like extra bacon, cheese or dressing at minimal cost. Available drinks include Coke products, Mountain Dew, rootbeer and iced tea.
Compared to other burger joints offering quarter pounder cheeseburgers in the PHP70-80 price range (like Snack Shack and Bypass Burger), I find Meal Point’s burgers a little more flavorful.
NOTES
Cost: PHP296 for two Heavy Combo meals.
Cleanliness: The place was clean in general but a bit dusty because of its roadside location.
Service: Good. Staff were courteous and smiling.
Sound level: They play cool pop songs with a mix of chill and house music at mid volume.
Lighting: Mostly natural light and a couple of light bulbs. Better at night, it’s beside the street and under the stars.
