Those who watch the Asian Food Channel (AFC) may remember him as one of the judges of E&O’s Search for the Next AFC Celebrity Chef. “E&O” stands for Eastern & Oriental Hotel, the luxury hotel chain that co-presented the series that first aired in 2011. Pinoy chef Bruce Lim was also one of the show’s judges. A Pinoy chef named Dino Ferrari had won the title. Keep this in mind, as this is now an ironic fact.
The person we’re referring to is Malaysian celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail — who is more popularly known as “Chef Wan.”
Following publication of the results of a CNN poll, which asked: “Which destination has the world’s best food?” The results ranked the Philippines as the No. 2 favorite foodie spot. Malaysia was ranked No. 6. Taiwan took the top spot. (Click this link to see the full list.)
It appears that Chef Wan didn’t quite agree with the ranking. He also made his disdain for {inoy food known. He made this evident in his interview with news website, Astro Awani.
The report noted that Chef Wan was “skeptical with the poll.” He was then quoted as saying, “Philippines is known to have the worst food in Asia, ask any chefs and they will tell you I am right.”
Pirior to making that declaration, Chef Wan had said, “My top five choices in terms of variety should be: number one Malaysia, followed by Italy, Thailand, Japan and India.”
He added, “I see food as varieties and flavours that reflect the culture and food, and that is why Malaysia should be the first world’s best food destination.”
