Hot holiday commodity: Ham prices go up

Ham prices have gone up less than three weeks before Christmas due to the spike in costs of pork, sugar, and spices.

While ham products sold at supermarkets and monitored by the trade department remain within the suggested range, prices of specialized made-to-order ham products made by medium-scale entrepreneurs have increased by PHP30 to PHP80 pesos per kilo.

Premium ham prices have risen to PHP450 per kilo from last year’s PHP380 per kilo. Ordinary ham, priced at PHP280 per kilo last year, now costs PHP360.

The “ham for the masses” is priced at PHP150 per 800 grams from last year’s PHP120.

Quiapo’s Excelente Ham prices have also gone up by PHP30 to PHP40 pesos per kilo. The Chinese bone in ham is now priced at PHP1,160 per kilo from last year’s PHP1,130 per kilo.

Scrap ham is now PHP1,000 per kilo from last year’s PHP960. Chinese sliced ham is at PHP1,200 from PHP1,160 while deboned ham is at PHP1,120 from PHP1,080 last year.

Several brands of pear-shaped ham are sold with a suggested retail price of PHP190 to PHP300 for 800 grams while jamon de bola is sold at PHP238 to PHP305 per kilo. —Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News
