5 foodie finds for the rainy season

Rainy season is here! Streets are going to get flooded, traffic will halt, and most of us will be stuck under the cold, wet weather. But fret not, here are some restaurants and dishes to help get you through the rainy season.  If you’re in Makati, better ditch the car and just walk around especially if it’s rush hour. Here are some spots to check out whether you’re in the east (Bel-Air), west (San Lorenzo), or middle (Legaspi) of the traffic labyrinth Makati.

Stuck in horrible Tomas Morato traffic? Head to Scout Castor Street and go to La Madera Gastro Pub for their new take on pub food. Whether you’re craving for a gigantic tower of the best onion rings ever (it’s nothing like you’ve ever tried before!), finger-lickin’ chicken wings coated in salted egg sauce, or authentic Kapampangan sisig with a creamy twist, Chef JM Sunglao and his team will not let you down. 3/F Kojak Building, 184 Sct Castor St cor Tomas Morato Ave, Bgy Laging Handa, Quezon City;

For the best hot dogs, burgers and bacon treats (tater bombs!), there’s no one like Lazy Bastard along Jupiter Street. From the genius minds of Patrick Cuartero and his team, Lazy Bastard’s New York-style hotdogs and burgers are easily a mile away from your usual bun-and-hotdog variety. Make sure to try their award-winning Honey Parmesan Dog (bacon-wrapped hotdog coated with honey and served with arugula and parmesan shavings), any of their chicken sandwiches, and of course their Tater Bombs (bacon-wrapped tater tots y’all!). Pro-Tip: Award-winning ABV Absinthe Bar (14th best in Asia!) is just on the other side of the wall. Make sure you find the “secret” passage leading to it. G/F 22 Jupiter cor Galaxy Sts, Bgy Bel-Air, Makati; +63 2 8325330. Daily 11am-3am.

Mitsuyado Sei-Men

Right above Lazy Bastard is Mitsuyado Sei-Men, home of authentic ramen and tantanmen that will surely wipe away all the stress from traveling this rainy season. Aside from the great Japanese comfort food, the interiors of Mitsuyado Sei-Men will transport you to the streets of Japan. It’s like you’re savoring every satisfying slurp of ramen in the streets of olden Japan while enjoying the comforts of indoor Makati. 2/F 22 Jupiter cor Galaxy Sts, Bgy Bel-Air, Makati; +63 2 5111390. Daily 11am-12am.

Your Local

If you find yourself in the maze that is Legaspi Village and your tummy starts grumbling, make your way to Esteban Street and into Your Local. While the interiors scream industrial minimalist New York, the food is more familiar and comforting with its warm Asian flavors, thanks to Chef Nicco Santos. A visit to Your Local means a serving (or more) of their bestsellers like the Beef Rendang Bun (Malaysian flavors with a Chinese flair), Chili Crab Bun (Singapore’s best dish made more convenient and delicious with a fried Chinese mantou), and the loaded Salmon Donburi (a glorious harmony of multiple elements in a Japanese-inspired dish).  G/F Universal LMS Building, 106 Esteban St, Legaspi Village, Makati City; +63 2 8236206, www.yourlocal.ph. Mon-Sat 11am-2pm, 6pm-10pm, Sun 10am-3pm.

Black Sheep

Chino Roces is one of the most notoriously jammed streets in Metro Manila. But if you do find yourself here at night, let traffic subside while enjoying dinner at the new Black Sheep in San Lorenzo Village. Now under Chef Patrick Go, the new Black Sheep boasts of Filipino-Chinese cuisine. Ain’t no territorial dispute here, just great food and full bellies! Start off dinner with Foie Long Bao (warm xiao long bao with rich foie gras; a treat after a stressful drive), then have some Pig on a Pillow (crispy pork cheek with creamy uni served between a fluffy mantou, hence the pillow), and share some Sheep Jumps Over The Wall (fully loaded fried rice with scallops, foie gras, chicken, sirloin beef, and more). 2230 Chino Roces Ave, UPRC1 Building; +63 2 7441569, www.blacksheepmnl.ph. Tue-Sun 12pm-2pm, 6pm-10:30pm.
