The dessert for sale in one of the Philippines most popular supermaket chains is actually “leche flan.” The word “leche” is Spanish for milk, while flan is derived from French and means “cake.”
However, the sign at a supermarket used “p” instead of “f” and the meaning of the phrase becomes completely different.
You see, a Newsgraph feature explains that since “milk is associated with kids,” Pinoys have used the word “leche” as a curse directed at immature people. However, over time, it’s become a curse word for general use, such as when it is used in this scenario.
Man No. 1: I have a meeting at a building along EDSA.
Man No. 2: When is your meeting? The traffic is really bad on EDSA. You should leave five hours before the scheduled time.
Man No. 1: Leche!
That said, “leche plan” could stand for a really stupid plan. Even so, that sign still doesn’t belong with the sweet treat. Because eating leche flan is definitely NOT a “leche plan.”
