Cocolatto: For people who’ve sworn off ice cream forever

If you had needed to quit ice cream for health concerns or philosophical reasons, Cocolatto is proof that somebody out there and up there loves you. It is a local ice cream brand that’s churning out dairy-free, sugar-free, glutten-free, and soy-free ice cream.

You know what this means: vegans, diabetics, and lactose-intolerant peeps can now take the power back!

Cocolatto started out some time in 2014, when “a health-conscious muncher and a happy-go-lucky foodie combined their passion for sinful sweets and health” says Dana Bulaon of Cocolatto over email. By April 2015, Cocolatto was born and was made available to the public.

So how were they able to make ice cream without the basic ice cream ingredients? Well, we’re only too happy to report that Cocolatto is not just plant-based, but coconut-based to be specific.

Coconut cream replaces dairy, so lactose-intolerant people can enjoy this; while coconut sugar substitutes for refined sugar, making it a low-glycemic treat that’s good for diabetics.

For good measure, the brand is also addressing two of the most common dietary restraints these days: Cocolatto is glutten-free and soy-free, as well.

But you know what Cocolatto isn’t? It’s not flavor-free.

There are seven flavors at the moment, which all come in a serving size of 125ml cup (starts at PHP155). At its most plain — that would have to be the Naked Coconut — the beautiful texture of the ice cream takes the spotlight. It’s creamy, it’s silky, it’s sweet. And while the coconut flavor is so there, it doesn’t taste like sunscreen.

The Macarron Macarena — which has toasted coco flakes in its creamy goodness — is strangely comparable to Chocnut.

If you’re not a fan of coconut flavor, you’ll take delight in the Chocolate Cake and the Macho Mango flavors. The dark, rich and creamy flavor profile of the former masks the taste of coconuts. Macho Mango meanwhile, is so refreshingly awesome.

At the moment, you can find Cocolatto in nine establishments across Metro Manila, including Sprout in Makati (G/F, Signa Designer Residences, Valero cor Rufino Streets. +63 917 5586593), Susi in BGC (Forbestown Road Burgos Circle, Taguig. +63 2 8337874), Epicurious in Mandaluyong (G/F Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong. +63 2 5707741), and Blissful Belly in QC (77 Xavierville Ave Loyola Height, QC. +63 2 7752419).
