Burger Pub at The Grove by Rockwell: Meaty burgers, tasty tapas, and an impressively wide selection of beers

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — You’d be surprised: There are people who don’t like burgers. They don’t like the surprises that come with burgers: the chunks of fat, the gummy parts, pickles, even the messy drippings.

But Burger Pub may just get these weirdos to change their mind. The newly opened joint, located at The Grove by Rockwell in Pasig, is a small and cozy affair with a 30-person capacity.

There is a bar for those who want to have an intimate moment with your burger and a beer. At the back is a couch area where larger groups can hang. On cool nights, you can sit, stand, smoke, and drink beer outside.

Burger Pub boasts their burger patties and bun that are made straight outta the kitchen. It uses imported meat from Canada and the US, with each 170g-patty blended and seasoned before it is cooked. No matter the variant, they come meaty and cooked medium rare.

The Pub Original (PHP345) comes with the house sauce, caramelized onions, and Irish cheddar, while the Bleu (PHP345) comes with a generous service of savory bleu cheese.

Because ex-Spanish Table chef Richard Lim is at the helm of Burger Pub, the restaurant has a healthy selection of tapas for non-burger fans: there’s the ever-reliable gambas (PHP285), the yummy beef salpicao (PHP395), chorizo peperonata (PHP365) and the churros (PHP270).

But the beer, of course, cannot be ignored. Burger Pub has the oldest still-operating brewery in the world, the German beer Weihenstephan on tap. The bar displays various European beers, mostly German, Belgian, and British, though co-owner JP Lim says they tend to change it up regularly, depending on demand and availability.

The place is usually packed from dinner to late nights. The lunch crowd has been thin, but due to the clamor, soon, they will be offering rice meals and pasta, like papardelle and spaghetti bolognese. The noodles will, of course, be made right in the kitchen.

Unit 101, The Grove by Rockwell, 117 E. Rodriguez Ave Jr. (C-5), Pasig. +63 2 5466864, +639176304979. Fri & Sat 12pm-1am. Mon – Thu 11am-11pm.

The Bleu (PHP345). The savory cheese complements the beefy goodness of the patty.

The Belgian Frites (PHP190) are flown in frozen from, you guessed it, Belgium. They are perfectly and simply salted, and are wonderful even without the garlic aioli or house blend dip.

The churros (PHP270) comes with two dips: dark chocolate and butterscotch-whisky (sans alcohol). At 230g, one order is good for two to three persons to share.
