Big B Burger

COCONUTS HOT SPOT—The options for freshly grilled yet affordable quarter-pounder burgers in Metro Manila are growing like mushrooms: Snack Shack, Bypass Burger, Meal Point and now, Big B Burger, an open-air burger joint along Magiting Street in Teacher’s Village, QC.

THE LOOK
This is a small joint that uses a black and white motif so it’s kind of hard to notice in the beginning. If it’s your first time to go, keep your eyes wide open or use your nose to follow the smell of heavenly beef smoke. Indoor seating is good for 10 people. The menu is handpainted on a glass window.

THE GRUB
Big B Burger differentiates itself from other burger joints with the food it serves. There are two char-grilled burger patties: BIG B, made up of beef and bacon, and BAM, a blend of beef and Spam. Both are available in quarter pounder, half-pounder and single pounder sizes, from as low as PHP99.

The burgers come with cheese and a special in-house sauce called  “awesome sauce”—and it really is awesome, with hints of freshly ground basil leaves and spices—that gives the burgers their unique Big B taste. You can get more “awesome sauce” from a dispenser that looks like a giant glue-gun.

They also serves poutine (i.e. Canadian French fries) topped with cheese and gravy, among others. The 100g serving is called “Poutine ng Ina Mo” and the 200g, “Poutine ng Ama Mo.” Cute. Or not.

Big B Burger serves drinks in repurposed iced-tea bottles. The bestseller is the Pink Potion, which is pink lemonade. They serve you a tall glass bottle with water, and then drop liquid that looks like the real gummy berry juice from Disney. And voila, the water becomes pink lemonade. Interestingly, you may also have your Pink Potion served “with feelings”—their fun term for carbonated water.

I have tried both the BIG B burger and BAM burger, and both are fantastic. The difference in taste between BIG B and BAM is not that noticeable, but the freshly frilled and crusty patties mixed with their awesome sauce is just magic. Make sure to eat in while it’s hot. For those who want added heat and spice, ask for the bottle of Sriracha. My suggestion? Grab one now and thank us later.

NOTES:
Cost: Approximately PHP100-PHP200 for food and drinks. Great value-for money place.
Cleanliness: Can be improved. Road dust and car exhaust from road can sometimes get into the store. No restroom.
Service: Great. Staff are accommodating and have a sense of humor. Can’t help but to overhear their conversations.
Sound level: They play high-energy pop and RnB music.
Lighting: Natural light. Bright at night since they use fluorescent and white light bulbs.
