Afters Espresso and Desserts in QC

COCONUTS HOT SPOT—Among all the coffee shops in Metro Manila, including those third wave cafés, Afters Espresso and Desserts remains one of my favorites.  It’s been around for some time now, and the mix of good coffee, thoughtful menu, and chill-out vibe keeps me coming back. It’s a great place to meet up with friends, catch-up on work (or studies), or to just relax and spend some “me” time.

THE LOOK
Afters has a modern-rustic interior that uses a dark wood tone, chimney bricks and creative lighting for a warm ambiance. You can always smell cofee brewing, but the best thing about Afters is the dim interior. It just brings “cozy” to a different level.

It’s so relaxing inside, it wouldn’t matter if its morning, night or raining outside. Be careful, though not to put on some Sade, Norah Jones or slow EBTG classics on your iPod, lest you fall asleep on one of their comfy sofas.

For those who’d want to study or work, more conventional chairs and tables are found on the farther end. There is also an al fresco area for those who’d want to enjoy the outdoor air.

THE GRUB
Afters Espresso and Desserts takes its coffee seriously. Aside from their regular offerings of brewed coffee, latté and mocha (flavored and non-flavored), espresso, macchiato and affogato, they also feature special bean imports occasionally. Make sure to check the chalkboard or with the barista for the latest bean brews.

These coffee beans may be appreciated even further through different brewing methods. There’s cold-brewed, hand-dripped and vacuum-pressed options available. There’s also loose-leaf teas available.

As the name suggests, its best to visit this place “after” a meal or as a nightcap. They focus more on coffee and dessert, so those looking for a hearty meal might not feel satisfied with the pasta and sandwiches they offer.

Another thing you can definitely enjoy here are the gelato. They serve various flavors and may be taken as affogato or as it is. Personal favorites include vanilla. They also offer good tea by the pot and ice-blended frappuccinos.

The lady owner is usually there at night to check on her store and make sure customers are happy and comfortable. This personal service and attention adds warmth to the place and for me makes this good coffeeshop even better.
