Hot off the heels of yesterday’s World Fried Chicken Day comes some rather Chicken-sad news for Jollibee, McDonald’s, and Mang Inasal after the three fast-food chains announced that they were experiencing a chicken shortage — meaning certain stores across the country are currently unable to serve up their signature chicken menu items.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, McDonald’s Philippines confirmed that there is an insufficient supply of high-quality local chicken that meets the company’s standards.
“We continue to serve chicken products in our stores. There are only a number of stores that temporarily don’t offer certain chicken products due to an increase in demand and unavailability of chicken supply that meet our standards and specifications, serving only our best to customers,” Adi Timbol-Hernandez, Corporate Relations Director of McDonald’s Philippines said.
She clarified, however, that certain products such as chicken nuggets and the chicken fillet were still available, as those items are imported.
The Jollibee group, which owns Jollibee and Mang Inasal, also told Inquirer that there were “a small number of stores” that are unable to serve their best-selling chicken meals as their current supply is unable to match the strong demand for their products.
Meanwhile, the United Broiler Raisers Association, a poultry farmers trade group, told ABS-CBN News that the substandard chicken supply is due to the soaring costs of feed, which prevents their chickens from receiving proper nutrition.
It’s a sore point for fast food fans, who are still reeling from a french fry shortage due to a lack of potato supply.
