5 new local wines, craft beers, and liquor sure to make this Christmas season a merry one

One thing we love about the Christmas season is the license it gives us to eat, drink, drink some more and be merry.

So as the season hits full swing, allow us to share with you our new finds: local wine, craft beers, and excellent liquors for you to serve at your party, bring to your friend’s shebang, or give as gifts. These will definitely get you drunk but more than that, they will definitely make you feel proud. Man oh man, do we know our alcohol!

1. Pedro’s Endless Summer Wheat Ale

At last year’s Hong Kong’s Beertopia, where beers from all over the world were showcased, Jill Borja wondered why the Philippines wasn’t represented. She called up three of her friends and they started brewing in her garage. A year and a half later, Pedro Brewcrafters was born. Just in October, they finally released their first product: The crisp Endless Summer Wheat Ale that tastes almost like Brew Kettle, except it has more flavor. Who is Pedro you may ask? Well, he’s Jill’s lolo, a doctor who left early in his career to pursue a simple and stress-free life. “He’s was also famous to enjoy one bottle of beer a day,” says Nadine Fanlo, Pedro’s marketing person. Starts PHP180/bottle, Available in six packs. The Bottle Shop, Backyard Kitchen + Brew, The Belle & Dragon. Facebook

2. Tapuey by Proudly Promdi

Proudly Promdi is a year-old three-man team that works with different communities from the North by rebranding, repackaging, and distributing their products in Manila. One of those products is this Tapuey wine from Adams, Ilocos Norte. Unlike the Tapuey you may have tasted, Proudly Promdi’s is smooth and silky. “That’s because it’s made with Bungkitan rice, a type of sticky rice,” Ken Alonzo, the main dude of Proudly Promdi shares. Add a sprig of Taragon, and you’ve got quite a drink. PHP350 for a 500ml bottle, delivery. Facebook +639479641413

3. Dragon Fire by Destileria Limtuaco

From the makers of the Imeldique cooking wine now comes another innovative creation. Behold: wine made with dragonfruit. Destileria Limtuaco used red dragon fruit meat to make for a vibrant magenta-colored wine perfect for the health-conscious drinker. Dragonfruit has low glycemic sugars, while its seeds are an excellent source of fiber, making Dragon Fire sound like the lesser evil. PHP380 for a 700ml bottle. Destileria Limtuaco online store. Also available in leading liquor stores nationwide.

4. Lakan Lambanog

Lakan isn’t new, but strangely and unfortunately the brand still as familiar as it should be. Lakan is lambanog as you know it: it’s strong and it’s potent. But unlike the regular lambanog, Lakan isn’t embellished with food coloring and flavors. It is made with pure coconut nectar and boasts of 90 proof alcohol potency. At liquor stores, you’ll find Lakan, in a tall and slender bottle, looking handsome alongside expensive vodka. It recently won a gold award from the Monde Selection, too. “Mahal po ito. Katapat po niyan yung mga mamahaling vodka,” says one staffer of Rustan’s Rockwell. PHP3,549 for a 750ml bottle. Rustan’s Supermarket

The Juan Brew Pale Ale only hit the market in July.
