With such a big crisis looming over our country right now, traffic would be the least of our worries. Yet, it is still a great inconvenience we suffer even as we try to get to relief centers, churches and government agencies to do our bit. But maybe, as we sit waiting for cars to move, we can relax and take some timeout for thought and reflection.
Whatever faith we adhere to, we can offer some form of prayer for the people affected by this tragedy. The loss our countrymen have suffered is unimaginable. They need to know that we are here offering prayers, giving them all the encouragement, and sending positive thoughts.
It is so heartening to see the whole world’s generous response to this calamity. But maybe even this early, we should also try to think ahead towards rebuilding. While we salute the bayanihan spirit, I hope we don’t keep alive the ningas kugon mentality.
We can use this time to think of ways to continue extending aid beyond providing basic needs. Put your mind to task and dream up little projects for reconstruction and rehabilitation. It might seem silly but we never really know what we are capable of unless we try.
Perhaps we can also use this time to read the papers for articles about this calamity. Read not just the human stories. They will just make us cry with sadness or shout with rage.
There are many credible essays both in local and foreign media with their own analyses and criticisms. Take a serious look at them and make your own determinations.
We need to learn some lessons to be able to move forward and be better prepared the next time another catastrophe strikes us.
There is really nothing new in what I am saying. But this tragedy is just so overwhelming and frustrating that it makes one feel so helpless. At first glance, it feels like there is nothing one can do to make it right. But then again, maybe there is, even in small efforts like these.
