Inspired by Philippine Fashion Week, which kicks off tomorrow (23-27 Oct, Mall of Asia), Coconuts Manila will be posting photos of not-so-usual suspects who have caught our discerning eye. Fashion, we believe, isn’t just couture. It’s everyday clothes.
METRO AIDES
Nellie and Ellen
Location: 7Eleven Boni Avenue cor Edsa
Devi de Veyra, Elle Decoration home and market editor, says: “The look is totally Pinoy and they wear their street sweeper uniform with pride, and with panache, adding their own little touches. See the little native pouch slung across Ellen’s shoulder? And the jelly shoes, which I think is practical, because they’re soft and kinda stylish. They asked if I was posting it on FB? And yes, they have FB, but unfortunately, my driver arrived. Cheers to street fashion! Oh, the salakot, disco colors, my fave.
SECURITY GUARD
Let’s call him Biboy
Location: Landmark Department Store in Makati
Coconuts Manila says: “First of all, this guy looks like he could be an actor; he’s got the looks and he’s got the height. Fortunately, he doesn’t have the attitude. We were already out of the door when we realized that we just passed a beautiful person who deserves to be documented! Landmark has a tradition of issuing a new uniform every month, and this is October’s edition. You still have till Oct 31 to catch this guy.”
]DOORMAN
Let’s call him John Andrew
Location: Raffles Hotel Makati
Coconuts Manila says: “The original Raffles Hotel in Singapore has a tradition of keeping only Indian guards, dressed in an all-white traditional Sikh attire. It’s a throwback to the colonial days. We’re glad that we didn’t need to import foreign talent for Raffles Hotel Makati, and instead adapted the idea with a doorman wearing barong and salakot. We love the muted lavender color and how the color black is on his barong, pants and shoes.”
