Stop the ennui: Lakihan Mo Logo

If the current gig scene is getting a bit too predictable, check out the Lakihan mo Logo. It’s a side project of people working in advertising, mostly from the creative department. “Lakihan mo Logo is like a commercial for people making commercials,” says Herbert Hernandez, who pretty much set this whole thing up. The production name is something of an inside joke in the advertising circle; it’s what they often hear from clients, Herbert says.

Like most productions, LML is a monthly gig usually happening on the third Thursday of the month. It’s already the 30th gig of the series that started roughly four years ago. Unlike most productions, however, consistency isn’t exactly its strongest quality; organizers have day jobs more demanding than newborns, so sometimes, like this month, LML is happening on the last Thursday of August.

What makes LML worth your time? Note: Lakihan Mo Logo is the brainchild of people working in creative departments of advertising agencies. This is something of an outlet, if you will, a place where they can let their ideas run wild. Without limits, things can and have gotten weird and strange, which is to say, absolutely interesting—and different from what’s mostly there.

Its posters are made by award winning art directors, like JP Cuison and Apol Sta. Maria, for one.

And bands are nothing of the usual sort. They’re either fronted by puppets (Gogoro), or of bayaws wearing makeup (Tanya Markova), and of people wearing costumes (Kiko Machine). You get to see bosses having fun like real human beings (The Executive band), or you get to hear strange music genres like “kantojazz” (Pasok mga Bwitre). Sometimes, you experience all this in pure total darkness.

If you think it’s all just marketing and pakulo, remember these guys work in advertising. It’s never just about an idea; there’s always something real that follows, like sponsorships, tie-ups, collabs, and x-deals. And if anything, performances are top-notch F na F (as in feel na feel).

Besides, Herbert Hernandez is the brother of Darwin Hernandez, he of Soupstar Entertainment, the management group of Sandwich, Imago, Pedicab, so audiences can expect professional musicians just hobbyists, if you’re feeling snobbish.

Another besides: the advertising community is loaded with super talented people who are in themselves professional bands, like Taken by Cars, Drip, Kiko Machine, and so on, ensuing that your night’s entertainment is legit. There’s one happening on Thursday—tomorrow!—if you’re still not convinced. It’s dubbed “Ladies Night” and bands like Flying Ipis, Moonstar88, Grouphug, and BrandX are playing.
