Souls of Manila: Michael Alonzo at Cash & Carry

Michael “Bulilit” Alonzo, 21, has been making and selling parol for five years now. He works in one of the stalls that are lined up outside Cash & Carry Mall in Makati. The Christmas lanterns he specializes in are made from bronze, capiz shells and LED lights, starting from PHP1,200 for a 20-inch size. The bigger ones start at PHP3,000. To ease the fears of energy-conscious buyers, he also hawks parols with energy-saving features that come with ICC remote controls.

Souls of Manila is a new Coconuts series of street portrait photography inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. Every human has a story to tell, and we intend to share some from the millions of souls who call Metro Manila home.
