Souls of Manila: Cherryl Si, 23, at Vargas Museum

Cheryl Si is the co founder of Route+63, a boutique company that espouses immersive travel in the Philippines.

“No I don’t get hassled when I travel around the country. I get that question a lot, but I have been travelling since I was in college and nothing disastrous has ever happened to me. Safety issue for me is negative image, mostly. But in reality it is safe for women to travel around here in the country. IIt is a matter of knowing what to do. As long as you act normally and not calling attention to yourself, you will be fine.”

“Sometimes I get a lewd greeting but I don’t pay attention to it. It is not a big thing, I will let it slide as long as they don’t do touch me or anything.”

“You have to wear something proper wherever you go. I would still wear short shorts when I travel, but in places where it is okay.”

“I usually travel with one person, but I have known women friends who travel alone and they are safe.”

“I am not afraid to get lost, since I know how to ask for direction. You won’t really get lost if you know how to ask. Sometimes even Google Maps can get their direction wrong.

“I love the view of the city light above the airport when we are about to land at night.”

Souls of Manila is a new Coconuts series of street portrait photography inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. Every human has a story to tell, and we intend to share some from the millions of souls who call Metro Manila home.
