Interview: George Soriano, maker of WhatsOnSale mobile app

How did you come up with the idea for the WhatsOnSale app?
I’m recounting the inspiration for the app that stemmed from my own experience as a consumer looking for promos online: My wife and I wanted to eat dinner out and we searched the Web for any promos, but we couldn’t find any. The week after, our friends mentioned they scored a dinner at 50% off, in a place near where we live. My frustration eventually evolved into an idea. I started thinking, what if all promos were in one place – food, shopping, credit cards, spa, entertainment…imagine everything on sale accessible in one place – like an app. I’m a very heavy smartphone user so my phone is always with me. And I’m sure it’s the same for more and more people. Just look around and see how many people holding and using their smartphones. And, who doesn’t like sale and discounts?

How did you choose the establishments to feature?
We initially targeted the establishments that we ourselves frequent. These include restaurants, airlines, services and retail shops that we are interested in knowing whenever they have promos. We also consulted friends, family and colleagues about the establishments that they patronize. We wanted to include premium establishments that are well-known and that appeal to most people.

Do you plan to add new functions to the app?
Right now, the app has a number of great features already such as sorting (alphabetically, most popular, just added), filtering (freebies, discounts, coupon, new) and many more. But we envision to take the app a step higher and make it more interactive and real-time. We are also very open to feedback for improvement.

Where do you like to go to shop?
We usually go to malls most accessible to us like Shangrila and Eastwood. We also go to MegaMall, Greenhills, BGC, Greenbelt and Rockwell (Power Plant). Mostly in the San Juan, Ortigas, Makati areas.

What is your favorite mall in Metro Manila?
Hmm, maybe Shangri-La Plaza, because of its accessibility, ambiance as well as the variety of establishments, especially with the new East Wing they opened.

What’s the best shopping tip you can give to someone who is not from here?
Be a smart and savvy shopper. You can score great promos and savings without sacrificing quality if you are in the know. Download the WhatsOnSale app so you can see the best ongoing promos and sale before you head out. Everything you need to know is there;) You can even avail of exclusive offers not found anywhere else.
