Interview: Frank Magalona on ‘The Mind Fact’, his science-themed pop-up bar

Got a tip? Send it to us at manila@coconuts.co.

‘The Mind Fact’ is Frank Magalona’s science-themed pop-up bar that’s happening on Wednesday night at the Mind Museum. Are you liking the puns and references yet?

It’s an instalment of the ongoing Axe Black campaign , where they ask an “Axe Black Man” to come up with their best bar idea, which the brand will gladly turn into reality.

Like the earlier pop-up bar by Fabio, it’s still a by-invitation-only event. Unlike Fabio’s earlier pop-up bar, which was all sleek and ‘understated elegance’, Frank’s pop-up Mind Fact is nerdy and fun and pretty damn cool.

He is a trained artist from UP Diliman, after all, so he’s highlighting the importance of science and the arts instead of the usual drinks and the chicks — though it doesn’t mean drinks and chicks are not a part of this, ehem, endeavor.

“I used the concept of the combination of Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow making up the color Black,” he tells us and already we cannot wait to score our invites from the website.

Read our highly entertaining interview with Frank below:

What or who is the inspiration behind the name of your bar? Does this have anything to do with the fact that it’s going to be at Mind Museum?
I used the concept of the combination of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow making up the color black. Then showed my partners DJ Toni & Raymond the CMYK venn diagram, and explained how it could be a strong concept for the pop up and one of them said “Wow that’s a mindfuck,” ha-ha. We named it [The Mind Fact] first before we even had Mind Museum as an option for the venue.

So whose idea was it to hold it at Mind Museum?
When we came up with the name, I asked my partners if we could put it up there. They also agreed that it would be the perfect spot for the bar.

How are you going to dress the museum to look like a bar instead of a…museum?
Our area is actually the Special Exhibition Hall inside the premises, which is actually bare so we created a cohesive floorplan that led to fabricating some items for the event like bar counters, wall panels, dividers, and the like. One of our sponsors, Mandaue Foam, also lent us loads of furniture so everybody gets to hangout comfortably.

Lots of talk about ‘class and sophistication’. So, does this mean millennials aren’t your target market?
This pop-up is actually a combination of the old and new, if we’re talking about generations, class and sophistication. I actually got brass players who will play classic jazz tunes alongside beatmakers who will showcase their prowess in producing the latest kind of music, and that just covers one side of the cube.

The drink “Kolor proof” sound genius! Whose idea of combining four drinks into one? Where did you get the inspiration?
I just got it from the CMYK venn diagram haha! That was my inspiration, combining colored alcohol to get the signature black drink.

One a scale of 1 to hammered-after-3-shots, how strong is this drink? Because you wouldn’t want to ruin any of the dinosaur displays there, no?
There aren’t going to be any dinosaurs there unless you’re talking about Jurassic folks at the party, haha! But yeah, [the drink] has wine in it, Johnnie Walker whisky, Ciroc vodka, and other fresh ingredients. I would give it a 7. I think three to four glasses is enough to make you dance like a raptor or a t-rex.

You’re the host and life of the party — will you have a date beside you throughout the night?
Yes, she’s sweeter than candy. Throughout the night? She knows I’m scared of diabetes.

It was mentioned in the press material that everything has a beginning and an ending. Does this mean you have a grand ending planned out for the event?
If everything goes as planned, yes!

8pm. The Mind Museum. J.Y. Campos Park, 3rd Avenue, Taguig, Metro Manila. By invitation
