Beware of the ‘Buy 2, take 1’ iPhone scam

Think before you buy online.

“Taxi driver Robert Marfil and Mila Belmas lost some PHP20,000 worth of cash and gadgets to the suspect who only introduced herself as Maribel,” reports ABS-CBN News correspondent Francis Faulve.

Marfil claimed that Maribel had offered him a “Buy 2, Take 1” promo for iPhone 5. He fell for it and she promised to bring him six iPhone 5 units. So, he deposited his payment to Maribel’s bank account. They then made arrangements to meet at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila so she could turn over the phones to him. Naturally, she never showed up.

In Belmas’ case, she gave Maribel an iPad tablet because the latter promised to give her a newer model.
