“Apung Lolet”, matriarch of Pampanga’s Best, passes away

Mrs. Leticia Lolita Olalia Hizon, also known as Apung Lolet, the matriarch and whose face you see on the packs of your favorite Pampanga’s Best tocino, has passed away.

The brand broke the news on Monday, October 4 on Pampanga’s Best official Facebook page.

“The woman in the logo of the Philippines’ iconic brand has joined our Creator. Her smile, charisma, and love for people has made a mark in the food industry. Her original Tocino remains the top food choice of every Filipino”, the brand wrote.

Apung Lolet was 84.

Mrs. Hizon founded Pampanga’s Best in 1967, and is credited for having introduced the original tocino, a sweet-salty cured pork dish derived from the traditional Kapampangan pindang (“fermented pork”), and is now a staple on Filipino breakfast tables.

Pampanga’s Best is today a multi-million meat processing corporation according to their official website. Aside from their iconic tocino, they also produce longganisa, hotdogs, ham, bacon, tapa, and other Filipino breakfast favorites.

Rest in peace, Apung Lolet, and thank you for revolutionizing our almusal.
