To weed out corrupt cops, PDRM will check their personal assets

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will introduce an asset profiling system to detect and arrest police officers who have succumbed to corruption.

The new oversight system will be rolled out by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) soon, according to a report by The Star Online‘s Farik Zolkepli and Nadirah H Rodzi.

JIPS will monitor the assets owned by police officers, and will determine if they have received ill-gotten gains from corrupt practices, based on the salary they earn commensurate to their rank and years of service.

the department’s senior deputy commissioner Zubaidah Md Ismail said the watchdog system will operate under the auspices of the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993, which allows for the declaration system for civil servants.

“This year, we are planning to implement asset profiling. It will be more detailed and require the officers involved to justify their assets and wealth.

“For example, an officer with the rank of SDCP is only expected to have certain amount of money or property.

“The current asset declaration system only requires personnel to declare their assets without having to justify why they have them,” she said.

She stated that the new system would also help clear the name of upstanding officers falsely accused of corruption.

The watchdog system is expected to be implemented later this year.
