Youth and Sports Ministry to discuss drugs at concerts in cabinet meeting

The Ministry of Youth and Sports will bring up the issue of drug abuse among youths, particularly at large-scale music events, at tomorrow’s weekly cabinet meeting.

Its minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, said the matter had to be highlighted to the cabinet to ensure the tragic events at the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) 2014 concert in Bukit Jalil, where six revellers died of drug overdoses and 14 more were hospitalised, would not happen again.

“We will not only look at concert organisation but also basic issues like awareness and education on drug abuse which must be given to the younger generation, especially when combined with entertainment events.

“We do not want to stop any concerts but I hope this (drug abuse) can be curtailed,” he said.

FMFA 2014 was scheduled to be a three-day event beginning last Thursday at the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex. Due to the six deaths, 14 hospitalisations and 29 arrests for drug possession among its patrons, the festival’s third day was cancelled.
