Youth and Sports Minister wants action against teams that can’t control their fans

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin wants the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to take action against any team that fails to control the actions of their fans and supporters.

Khairy, disappointed with the incident involving Perak fans after the Super League match against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Tuesday, wants the FAM and the police to tighten security during and after matches.

“If the FAM mete out punishment quickly, such teams will be more responsible to ensure the behaviour of their fans and supporters.

“I believe even if we have enough personnel and security officers to monitor fans and supporters during matches, the FAM and police must also play a pro-active role and not act after an incident,” he said in a report by Bernama

On Tuesday, unruly Perak fans hurled stones at the JDT tour bus and let off flares after Perak lost 1-0. The violence also resulted in two members of the press, from NSTP and Sinar Harian, being injured.

The Federal Reserve Unit (FRU)  had to be called in to fire tear gas and water cannons at thee rioting Perak fans after the match.

Khairy also suggested that the FAM take drastic action against teams that failed to control the action of their fans by playing matches behind closed doors in empty stadiums.

“Security and safety is the responsibility of the home team. Therefore, if the fans act violently, the team will have to bear the consequences as well,” he said.
