Would we make this up? No. No, because we’re just not that imaginative, to be honest.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) swooped down on the Ayer Itam police station in Penang early yesterday morning to foil an attempt to bribe five police officers … with fried chicken stuffed with cash.
Allow us to reiterate: fried chicken. Stuffed with cash.
The raid, which took place at 3.30am, resulted in the apprehension of five cops and a woman who had brought a package of fried chicken with money stuffed inside them, allegedly as a payoff for the officers.
An anonymous source told Harian Metro that the attempted bribe was in connection to a traffic stop by the five officers of a car believed to have been stolen in Jalan Paya Terubong on Friday.
The bribe was reportedly aimed at urging the five officers to back off from pursuing their investigation into the stolen car.
Five minutes after the woman arrived at the police station with her fowl foul bag of cash, MACC officers descended upon the station and apprehended all five officers involved in the exchange.
“The entire police station was examined by the MACC before the detained officers had their statements taken and then released on bail,” the source said.
Penang state PDRM chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab confirmed the detention of the five officers, and the corruption investigation initiated against them.
“The five police officers were apprehended by the MACC and they will be investigated at the earliest opportunity. We (the PDRM) do not currently know the status of the case,” he said.
“I have been briefed on the arrests of the officers, and they have already been released.”
Again: fried chicken. Stuffed with cash.
