‘World’s longest snake’ caught in Penang dies days after capture

Just as we thought this reptile could slither its way into record books, the recently-captured python in Penang — unofficially the ‘longest in the world’ — has reportedly died.

The eight-metre long reticulated python was discovered by workers at the construction site of a flyover in Paya Terubong on Thursday.

Believed to have weighed 250kg — some 90 kg heavier than the current largest snake in the world, Medusa — the snake died on Sunday, before it was due to be transferred to the Wildlife Department, The Star Online reports.

It was also reported that the python had laid an egg the day before it died.

Yesterday, international as well as local media dubbed the Penang python — found beneath a tree — as the new ‘longest snake in the world’, set to steal the title from another reticulated python measuring 7.67 metres.
