Women drivers be warned: smash and grabs are on the rise. Again.

Melaka police are warning women who drive alone to be more vigilant at night: the incidences of smash-and-grabs are on the rise. Well, well … if it doesn’t feel like 2006 all over again. In the background I can faintly hear Fergie’s Glamorous playing. G-L-A-M…

State police chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan told  New Straits Times that thieves are waiting for unsuspecting female driver to pull up to red traffic lights, and then smashing the window to grab any visible handbag. If the door is unlocked, they’ll save you the glass repair, and just open and take what is visible.

He has asked women to refrain from putting handbags on the front passenger seat, and “no worries, our department is working out ways to prevent these cases from recurring.”

“Working out ways”: I guess there’s more than one way to skin a cat. But it might be enough to catch and arrest the miscreants who are doing this.
