Woman’s hand severed by jealous husband in parking lot, doctors able to reattach

A Penang woman whose hand was severed by her jealous husband in a fit of rage had a glimmer of good news over the weekend after doctors successfully re-attached the limb back to her left wrist.

Surgeons spent over 15 hours in the operating theater of Penang Hospital on Sunday, fighting to save the woman’s hand. Attending doctors cannot yet comment on the functionality of the limb.

The victim’s mother reported to Bernama that her 24-year-old daughter was now recovering in hospital.

“She is still in shock and traumatized, our family is continuously giving her words of encouragement to stay strong for her children. Alhamdulillah, our family is grateful that the surgery was successful and I hope her hand can function as usual again,” she said.

Early Sunday morning, the woman’s husband is alleged to have severed her left wrist in the third-floor parking area of a condo building in Bayan Lepas.

Police received the call at 12:55am, and rushed to the scene to find the woman without hand and bleeding. The victim’s foot was also broken during the unbridled attack.

A team was then dispatched to hunt down the suspected attacker, and her 39-year-old husband was picked up in front of a local surau (prayer room) at 3am the same day.

Family members claim that the husband was a jealous person, and had been upset that the woman continued her nursing studies at a medical college in Kuala Lumpur.

While currently in the process of divorcing, the couple share two children, a girl who lives with the mother, and a son who stays with the father.

Authorities will keep the suspect in remand until August 19 while they investigate.

We hope the victim’s condition improves, and that she has a speedy recovery.
