A woman was recently arrested for attempting to smuggle snakes onto a plane. That’s right folks, we’re talking about live, slithery, hissy-snakes. And it wasn’t just one or two… she had a whole nest of them!

But it was no Snakes on a Plane situation here – the smuggled reptiles stayed contained in her checked-in baggage and she ended up in handcuffs on the ground.

It was revealed 22 snakes and a chameleon were discovered inside the baggage of a woman who had arrived in Chennai from Kuala Lumpur on an AirAsia flight.

The Chennai customs department announced that the female passenger was “intercepted” upon arrival, and her checked-in baggage was examined, resulting in the seizure of the reptiles under customs and wildlife protection laws.

According to local media, the reptiles were found in transparent plastic containers.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred as in October 2022, over 1,200 exotic reptiles were seized in Chennai, including ball pythons, green iguanas, monitor lizards, corn snakes, and African spurred tortoises, as reported by India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence’s annual report.
